The Department of marketing is one of the five Departments of the Faculty of Business Management studies. It was established at the beginning of the 1996/1997 academic year to offer Higher National Diploma in Marketing, to meet the growing demand for middle-level managers in both public and private sector organizations.
The Department is an innovative unit that continues to define its mission around the creation of world class marketing personnel for public, private and not for private sectors in Ghana and beyond. The Department has well qualified and experienced lecturers who have conducted research in e-business, strategic marketing, marketing communication entrepreneurship, international marketing, international business, small business management, branding and provide cutting-edge marketing and management advice to organization within and outside of Sunyani Polytechnic.
In line with the vision of the University, the Department is committed to being the cradle of excellence in the provision of career-focused education and practical training in the field of marketing and entrepreneurship.
Objectives of the Department
The Department of marketing derives its objectives from the broad objectives of the polytechnic, these objectives are;
To train skilled supporting staff and middle level marketing personnel.
To cater for the marketing needs of the various identifiable sectors of the economy by giving equal prominence to the public, private and voluntary/charitable organizations.
To provide opportunity for the diploma holders to advance to the status of professional marketers.
To lay the foundation for the study of Marketing at higher academic levels.
Programmes offered by the Department
The Department runs only two programmes now.
HND Marketing (Regular & Weekend)
B-Tech in Entrepreneurship and Finance (Regular & Weekend)
Diploma in Electronic Marketing (Regular)
Diploma in Business Administration (Regular)
Higher National Diploma in Marketing
The HND Marketing Programme, which is now in its eleventh academic year, began with a student population of 98 with an average annual admission of 200students. Over the years, the students’ population had increased tremendously but currently it has marginally decreased due to other external factors of the University. So far, plans are underway to increase the students’ enrolment in the Department.
B-Tech in Entrepreneurship and Finance
The Department had currently signed a memorandum of understanding with Kumasi Technical University to run B-Tech in Entrepreneurship and Finance programmes. The programme runs as a top up on weekends. The B-Tech in Entrepreneurship and Finance programme is to equip students with entrepreneurial or business acumen to enhance their competnences and increase the productitivity. Publicity is on-going to create awareness of the programme to interested students.
Diploma in Electronic Marketing & Diploma in Business Administration
The Department is currently admitting students into these programmes. The Diploma in Electronic course is designed to equip students with the ability to develop a range of skills and knowledge, necessary to meet demands of the rapidly evolving demands of Electronic-Marketing and Business World. It is also enhancing career opportunities specifically in the area of online marketing and media management.
The Diploma in Business Administration is also suitable for all those who are, or aspire to be, ‘junior’ and ‘middle’ level managers in organizations and businesses. Again, the course will enable students to gain new skills and develop existing knowledge and understanding of a range of general management theories.

Mature persons who want to acquire academic qualification in Marketing Management
People in both public and private sectors who would want to upgrade their status to the senior/ middle level status.
Senior Secondary Faculty Certificate holders who want to pursue Marketing as a career. Vocational/General Business Certificate holders
History of the Department
The CIM programme which was mounted in the 2003/2004 academic year started with a students’ population of 12. Unfortunately, the frustrations in passing professional examinations together with students acquiring the foreign exchange component of the programme have negatively affected enrolment to the programme.
The Department also introduced the London Centre of Marketing (LCM) programmes at the beginning of the 2007/2008 academic year but the programme is currently not being run due to accreditation issues in the United Kingdom.

The Department has a good blend of lecturers with academic and professional qualifications. The lecturers hold PhD, MBA, MPhil, MA and MSc in marketing related courses together with professional qualifications in CIM (UK)
The current numerical strength of full time lecturers stands at 20 of which 10 are Senior Lecturers. They are supported by 3 administrative staff.
