The Department of Computer Science has well equipped computer laboratories. In the interim it houses the new Department of Statistics & Mathematics. The Department of Computer Science runs the following programs HND Computer Science, HND Information & Communication Technology (ICT). Pre-HND Computer Science and COTVET Computer Science are non-tertiary programmes at the Department.
The Computer Science Department was formerly a section under the Liberal Studies Department (Department of Communication Studies) of the then Sunyani Polytechnic. It was carved out to stand on its own as a Department in January 2012 to train and provide IT specialists to meet the demands of the ICT industry. The Department trains students in the areas of programing, networking, web technologies, database management systems as well as hardware’s with assembling. A broad commitment to Computer Science Education will not only create a public understanding but also will help to address the national shortage of Computer Specialists. The creation of a viable model for a Computer Science and its implementation at the University is a necessary first step toward reaching the above goals.
The mission of the Department is to serve as centre of excellence in the provision of high quality holistic education and professional training in Computer Sciences; as well as serve as a leading centre for cutting-edge advanced research and development work in current and emerging areas in Information and Communication Technology.
The main objectives of the Department are;
The Department has the following future plans to; Introduce two new short courses; Java Programming and Android Programming Establish two research centres; Hardware and Assembling and Software Development. Seek accreditation to run courses in Mathematics and Statistics under the Department of Statistics and Mathematics.
The Department is linked to two institutions, which are the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Centre for Biodiversity Utilization and Development (CEBUD)
There is a joint research programme with CEBUD to develop less utilised food items with the view to preventing their extinction and also reducing poverty.
The Department is supported by IFAD to run training programmes for the rural communities. The training is meant to build their capacity in order to set up their own services.
The goal of this programme has been to help alleviate poverty. Also, the Department in collaboration with the Ghana Tourist Board is working towards developing and managing some tourist sites in the Brong Ahafo Region.
