Memorandum of Understanding: STU signs an MoU with Furnart Ghana Limited, Accra

The Sunyani Technical University (STU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Furnart Ghana Limited at a brief ceremony in Sunyani.

Established in 1974, Furnart Ghana Limited is leading furniture, joinery, and office manufacturer in Ghana.

The Vice-Chancellor of STU, Professor Ing. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah signed on behalf of the university while Mr. William Olmstead, the Managing Director of Furnart Ghana Limited signed for his company.

The MOU is to provide a framework of co-operation between STU and Furnart “in support of industry and academia collaboration for the practical training of students in furniture design and production, develop industry relevant curriculum, and provide access to any faculty member of STU for research purposes.”

The MOU focuses on five key areas which include Student training in practical and modern furniture design and production, Staff training in practical and modern furniture design and production as well as Research collaboration – Joint Research and Publication, among others.

Also under the MOU, Furnart Ghana Limited, has agreed to provide basic accommodation and stipend to students of STU during attachment and offer employment on its standard terms to all students who have successfully completed an attachment.

The MOU further provides for the exploration of areas of knowledge transfer between the two institutions in the form of seminars, workshops and lecture series, among others.

According to the MOU, “the parties shall regularly monitor and review their activities under the MOU, and evaluate the results of the implementation in order to ascertain whether the purpose and areas of co-operation have been achieved and enable them to formulate recommendation with the view to improving future co-operation and activities.”

Vice Chancellor of STU, Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah was very happy about the collaboration saying it would go a long way to offer a great opportunity for both students and lecturers to gain a deeper insight into the practical aspect of furniture and joinery.

He said the MOU would further entrench the core reasons for the establishment of technical universities.

Mr. William Olmstead, for his part, noted that both his company and STU stand to gain a lot from this collaboration and hoped that it would positively impact on the economic fortunes of Ghana.

Present at the ceremony were the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university, Dr. Justice Solomon Korantwi-Barimah; the Registrar, Mr. S.A Obour, the Public Relations Officer of STU, E.K Amponsah; the Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment, Dr. Evans Zoya Kpamma; the H.O.D of Wood Technology, Mr. Emmanuel Drah and Dr. Jones Lewis Arthur, Director of the International Relations and Institutional Linkage Directorate.
