VCTU-G organises training to strengthen leadership in technical universities

Senior members from Ghana’s ten technical universities are participating in a nationwide capacity-building programme aimed at equipping them with up-to-date skills and knowledge to meet evolving demands in higher education administration. The initiative is being organized under the auspices of the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities – Ghana.

One of the training sessions, held at Sunyani Technical University and coordinated by its Directorate of Human Resource Development, brought together key administrative leaders as facilitators. These included Dr Christopher Amehoe, Registrar of Ho Technical University and Immediate Past Chairman of the Committee of Registrars and Directors of Finance; Dr Moses Maclean Abnory, current Chairman of the Committee and Registrar of Takoradi Technical University; Alhassan Abdul-Razak, Director of Finance at Tamale Technical University; and Joseph Mensah Oti-Asirifi, Executive Secretary of VCTU-G.

In his presentation, Dr. Christopher Amehoe emphasized the critical role of Senior Administrative and Professional Staff (SAPS) in university governance and highlighted experience, mentorship, exposure, and relevant qualifications as essential components in strengthening administrative capacity.

According to him, SAPS serve as the driving force behind technical universities, making invaluable contributions to institutional growth and development.

Dr Moses Maclean Abnory reinforced this perspective, noting that senior administrators are central to shaping and sustaining institutions and described them as the link between governance structures and operational execution, translating policy decisions into practical outcomes that support institutional effectiveness.

Focusing on communication, Mr. Oti-Asirifi underscored the importance of administrative writing in ensuring efficient coordination, proper record-keeping, accountability, and transparency.

He identified common tools used in university correspondence, including memos, official letters, circulars, notices, minutes, handover notes, emails, and WhatsApp.

He further stressed that administrative writing must reflect the professionalism and intellectual rigour associated with academic institutions. Effective documentation, he said, should be clear, accurate, concise, well-structured, and professionally presented.

The session was also attended by the Vice-Chancellor of STU, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah; the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Arch. Prof. Evans Zoya Kpamma; the Registrar, Samuel Ankama Obour; and the Director of Finance, Thomas Kwarfo, who joined senior members in the training.
